There are documents describing the conversion of an iMac to a monitor
free rack mount case.  I don't remeber if they provide a VGA connector
in the process or not.  But, either way, they might be a usefull
starting point for you.

And for the classic iMac.  

It sounds like in general all you have to do is either salvage the iMac
power supply or build an adapter, if you want to totally do it on your own.
