That's the part that sucks most.  Blender is no longer
officially available, Maya PLE is only for Mac and PC (guess
A/W believes no up and coming graphics students don't use
linux), Maya Complete is $2k retail, Unlimited is around $7k,
student copy is still $700.

Houdini Apprentice is pretty cool though, i'm running it on my
Octane.  It's very different conceptually from Maya but it is
extremely flexible.

BMRT can be had on the net, but no longer from the official
site.

If anyone knows of a *good* 2D paint app (like Amazon
Paint) for IRIX that is either cheap or has a student program
i'd love to hear about it (not GIMP).
