I could probably at the least put a tankful of gas in my car if I had a
buck for every time I've heard an Apple engineer complain "Yes, we know
this behavior is stupid and breoken, but we're not allowed to fix it
because back in the days of the Mac 128k, Steve Jobs decreed that It
Shalt Be This Way."

For example, there's the way that Macs would always switch th the
(printer port, iirc) to look for a network if there was nothing
connected to the Ethernet port, and then stay there on the next boot and
not go check Ethernet at all, *regardless of* whether the friggin'
printer port had anything connected to it either.

And then there's a guy I knew who was doing QA for Apple and suggested
that, on extended keyboards, since (lemme see if I remember this right
here) dragging with command held down forced a move, and dragging with
some other modifier -- maybe option-drag -- forced a copy, why not make
control-drag create an alias in the location you dragged to?  And lo,
the word came down from on high, No, This Shall Not Be, For The Mac Plus
Hath No Control Key.


(Yo!  Earth to Head Apple Dude.  The Mac Plus also hath no color screen,
no Fkeys on its keyboard, no CDROM, no internal hard disk, and no
built-in Ethernet, but this doesn't seem to have stopped anyone from
implementing support for THOSE in later MacOS versions...  and let's
just not start the discussion of screen resolutions and color depth,
huh?  And I still remember when popping the cover on a NuBus machine and
plugging extra RAM into the readily-accessible SIMM slots would void
your warranty if Apple found out it hadn't been done by an Apple
Authorized Service Technician.)
