maybe because this is an *age* of deception and misrepresentation?  From
the highest to the lowest, it seems like people are EXPECTED to lie.
And that's when they're not actually being *ordered* to lie.

HR managers still suffer from the delusion that Corporate Appearance
actually helps get the job done.  And for front-facing people like, say,
corporate-sales people and senior staff, it's probably true.  They fail
to grasp that this does not generalize to the greasemonkeys who keep
everything running.

I think it says something about a large segment of our society being
afraid to tell the truth.  (I think a larger segment is afraid to hear
it, but I think that's for different reasons.)
