[rescue] Anyone ever use an LX for ppp?

I have a Sparcstation LX running OpenBSD 3.0, which I'm trying to make
into a dial-on-demand PPP box and pf/NAT firewall. There's just one
problem .... it doesn't seem to want to talk to the modem. There's
some kind of communication problem. If I send an ATZ to ttya or cuaa, I
get the expected light pattern on the modem (a USR Courier V.Everything
external), but the command never returns.

Has anyone else run into any problems connecting a regular serial modem
to an LX? Is there anything I need to know?
