Hmm....  that's strange.  I can find patches mentioning it for 2.5.1
too, and as early as 2000, eg in Patch-ID# 105181-23 and 103640-35.

4320394 scrubbing the cache may improve the reliability of some systems         

I should probably try to find a copy of the SPARC Architecture Manual....
