Irix is, IMO, the only OS suitable for SGI/MIPS equipment if you want to use tha hardware and run needed apps.  Now if it was one of those Intel abomonations, then Linux would probably be a good choice.

However, if you're looking for an excersise in "I wonder what would happen", go for it.  It might also be a good way to practive self-flagellation.
