This is what I would buy:

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1318089563

This is an external, SCSI to SCSI RAID controller.

conceptual diagram:

sun system <--> external scsi port <--> Mylex <--> many SCSI drives

The beauty of this is, that to the host, any host, it just appears as
one or more physical SCSI drives, that is, anything that speaks SCSI
can use it, whether it be a Mac, SGI, Sun, HP, PC, Alpha, whatever.
No software is needed. Heck, you could even hook it up to a MicroVAX.

You could either stick the controller in an old PC tower and put the
drives in the case, or get a hot swap shelf and use that for hotswap
capability.

The RAID part is handled by the Mylex. If you buy two and have the
right cables and the right model, you can make them part of a failover
system, where if one fails the other controller will automatically
kick in and manage the drives; while both are running you get better
performance.

I have a 32MB version of this device on its way.

Cordially,
