Actually, the thermo sensor is the CPU itself.

Nope, its just a straight airflow path through the widely-spaced fins of
the CPU board heatsink.  

I think one reason it works better is that the bottom of the cube is more a
"mesh" of small holes, while the top has big "vents".  Less airflow resistance
when coming from the top.

There's actually a bracket for putting a fan *inside* the Cube - 
see http://www.praxxus.com/cubefan/ for pictures.  Apple just never
shipped it with a fan.
