There's a reason they sell those "cool plates" for use with the Ti's
and Pismos on desktops.  I always turn my Pismo on its side (I'm
usually using it in the living room), setting on the edges of the case
top and bottom, when I leave it for more than a couple of minutes.

Nevertheless, after three days straight of being left on (just
discovered mldonkey, new (to me) p2p protocol), I don't like the
way my < 1 year-old 20GB IBM HD is sounding. :-/
