Batteries are almost always standard sealed lead acid type, just match
physical size and capacity and go. I have found at least with APC and
rebadged APC products (Cabletron), as well as some cheap junk ones, if
the UPS does nothing, pull the batteries and charge them with an
appropriately rated charger overnight, then put them back in and try
again, they will usually light up and tell you the batteries need to be
replaced. So far the ones I have played with that do this have been
fine with new batteries. I have seen some APCs that do not respond
properly even to this treatment, and those have not responded well to
new batteries either. They all ended up being sent for repair or swapped
in for an upgrade.
