Thats sort of what its used for...but in a really fuckin' ugly way.
instead of loading a TCP/IP stack on each machine and giving it an IP
address, it would encapsulate IP into IPX, send it to the II box, which
would strip out the IP from the IPX and send it out.

We had one when I worked at USLD in San Antonio.  Between it, HP's
"reflections" mainframe access software, and standard TCPIP, every windoze
box had 3 individual winsock.dll files.

And to top it off, because of all this, we couldn't run DHCP...1100
workstations, all with hand-coordinated IP addressing.
