Yes, smart.

No, not smart.

E-mail encryption should always be done in/beside/from the MUA, never
any part of the transport.

(of course POP/IMAP authentication needs to be done securely, and any
kind of remote SMTP server access needs authentication too....)

Yup -- just don't ever use any M$ software and they cannot affect your
life!  :-)
