I can attest to that. I ran a 911c4 in some regional rally action in AZ, and
I have been looking for the RIGHT 911 ver since.

The only problem being I'm 6'2" and 350lbs, so the older 911's are kind of a
tight squeeze on the bod, and the newer ones a tight squeeze on the wallet.

When the price of a good used 996 drops into the $30-$40k range, then I'll
start seriously thinking about getting one.

Until then I have a tough choice to make when I buy a new car late rthis
year, Audi S4, or BMW 330xi
