A few years ago I worked at a network management company. They employed
as their IT director a man by the name of Terry Stader. Terry also happened
to be Command Master Chief Stader, and was a 30 year Navy man. 

Terry was an interesting guy. From the late 1960's all the way up until
the early 1990's he was involved in over the horizon data links using radio.


I understand that he and his team had the first OTH packet radio system
using TCP/IP in the early 80's. At some point they used early Sun systems
with custom built terminal node controllers over a serial interface, and
an analog encryption device similar in concept to an STU-III (secure telephone
unit, mark 3)

That must have been a very cool project to work on.
