*nod* it varies all over. I'm from the midwest (lived in both the
Chicago and Indianapolis areas.) Most places have basements here. They
sometimes flood depending on where you are and how the drainage for the
area is setup. You can be near the top of a hill and have a basement well
above the water table but flood because the urban planning was poor :(

There is also an area in Indianapolis which is built in a flood plane.
Good deals on homes there, but the basement can definately not be a
machine room :(

All the basements I've been in here in the midwest are colder than the
rest of the house... makes for good excuse to snuggle your date while
viewing a movie you've rented. But I digress.

Makes for a good machine room, too. The condo I'm in is a split-level
with the ground floor halfway built into a hill... it's where the
RSM 2000 lives. Having a surround-sound setup which overpowers the
fans on the disk array is important. Having them on a different
circuit is also important :)

When I lived in California (Silicon Valley) basements are non-existant
because the water table is so high.
