I used to work with a guy who was in the US army as a tank driver.
(Late 80s, on the border with East Germany.) He said that if the
armor of their tank was ever damaged, such that you could see the
inner layers, they were under strict orders not to look at it.

Many layers of various types of unobtanium, apparently.
