[rescue] "New" Ultra 30

CPU-wise, the Ultra 30 has a superior combination of speed and cache over
*most* Ultra 5s.

The Ultra 30 is SCSI-based, the Ultra 5 is (typically) IDE based - IDE is
good for obtaining large amounts of storage inexpensively, SCSI is consider
a better performer.

The Ultra 30 you got has a Creator graphics card, which is generally
considered "better" than any of the onboard framebuffers on an Ultra 5.

The Ultra 30 can take dual Creator cards, which are getting quite
inexpensive (Creator 2D are under $100, Creator 3D under $200). Boththe
Ultra 5 and Ultra 30 can take additional PCI cards, but only the Ultra 30
can take the "vertical" UPA cards (IIRC, not 100% sure).

The Ultra 5 uses (relatively) expensive RAM, the Ultra 30 takes (relatively)
less-expensive SS/20-compatible RAM. The Ultra 30 can take up to 16 DIMMs,
the Ultra 5 can only take less, but the Ultra 5 can take "denser" DIMMS
(Max. DIMM size for Ultra 30 is 128 Meg, the Ultra 5 can take up to 256 Meg
DIMMs).

The Ultra 30 can take dual UPA framebuffers *and* 4 PCI cards, the Ultra 5
has no UPA slots and 3 or 4 PCI slots.

Oh, and finally, the Ultra 30 is a desk-side case, the Ultra 5 is a desktop
case - preferences vary....

IMHO, the Ultra 30 is a better investment, as the Ultra 5 is considered to
be the low-end "Pee Cee" based UltraSPARC. While I am sure they are fine
computers, that perception will only drive down any future resale value...

HTH,

Ken
