I'm not saying that $5k is too much for SI (sorry, never tried
Maya).  It's just that a lot of people can't afford it.  I mean, if you
are a student (I know people hate the poor student example, but it is
convienient), you are busting your butt to pay for tuition, and the
question becomes, do I buy an editing station so that I can edit my own
films since I can't use the schools machines for anything but official
projects, or do I delay my graduation with a film major for a year so that
I can buy an editing station (still 2+ grand for an iMac and FCP and
extra drive space) to do my own work on.  A question that has presented
itself in numerous forms to numerous people that I know.

OK, this ignores that most college students are just stupid and lazy
people who aren't paying and just want to party, and really have quite a
bit of money.  I keep making that assumption that more people are like me
and some of my friends, which is a totally groundless assumption to make.
