Actually the long-term effects from direct exposure don't
usually cause you to glow yourself, but there are teratogenetic
effects that get passed on to the next generation--so the really
cool part (as a former Navy nuke) is that your kids not only
glow themselves (and don't need night lights) but they have this
awesome third eye and little tentacles instead of fingers.

Or not. I've got several hundred mrem lifetime, and they
tell me that there's no evidence of effects from that dosage
twitch twitch.

The worst part of being an ex-Navy-nuke is having the only
ex-President who was a nuke be part of that 10% who can't
pronouce NUKE-LEE-ER.

Come to think of it, running nuclear reactors on a submarine
is one of the geekier things I ever did...of course I loved
the fire control (targeting) computers, which had about 48k
of memory IIRC. We still had the old WWII-vintage analog
"torpedo computer" on the conn as a backup for when fire
control went down, too...

Don't get me started on exactly what happened at TMI and
Chernobyl, either. Let's just leave it as "the stupid
shall be punished, along with the surrounding countryside."
