Actually, that's not strictly true either.  There's two relevant issues:
1.  Gun stores have reported a steady increase throughout the Obama
presidency in self-reported first-time gun buyers;
2.  It is a standard assumption in pretty much every field that surveys
heavily under-report gun ownership, because many owners are suspicious
of why someone wants to know.
