This is the part of the equation that never made sense to me.

If you're manufacturing a money-making machine, wouldn't it make sense to
eat the NRE up-front (or take advance payments for production), and run
the first round of hardware until the NRE is recouped?  Selling it direct
from the foundry seems entirely too altruistic, when trickling the supply
out (or the previous generation's supply) would net so much more money.

Perhaps this is what's happening and why BFL is taking so long to deliver?
