Can an Android phone run without Google?
Does Android really allow for a smartphone experience where you don't
share with Google?

a few different flavors of 'yes'.

i started poking around after reading that, and besides just
configuring the stock os, there were something like 7 alternate
android builds for my gf's phone, some of which don't even offer
google apps.
