You can probably get a 2nd gen (4 digit) 2-core-per-socket system pretty 
cheaply.  I had been scoring IBM LS21 blades (dual socket w/2xxx dual 
core opteron) w/o memory for about $30 shipped off ebay.  Of course, you 
need a BladeCenter to shove them in, which makes it not quiet, but you 
can probably find quiet 2U or 4U dual-opteron 2xxx systems.  (The 4-
digit opterons all have hardware virt support).
