So there was a solution to my Windows 7 problem after all.

One thing I was unaware of with 7 and Vista is that you can complete
the install without entering a license key; the software will run for
30 days before crapping out.

After the install was completed I entered the key later that night and
it worked fine.

The same key that failed during "install time" worked later with no
registry hacks or anything.
