Dell has an offer (link below) for a dual quad-core Opteron server
that can take 8x memory DIMMs (32 Gigs possible), dual power supplies,
etc. for $766 ($866 off regular price). It includes 4 Gigs of RAM and
dual 250 Gig SATA HDs, DVD-ROM and 3 year warranty. It is a tower
form-factor server.

Hot Swap drive trays are available for $49, but you have to also buy
an add-in RAID card ($199 and up).
With the ability to gobble up all that RAM, and with 8 reasonable
cores, this would make a very nice home/small lab VM host.
