If you configure Cygwin/X to run your X sessions within a single window
rather than seamlessly, you should be able to start gnome-session and have
it manage your X session. To do this, unselect "Hide Root Window" on the
Cygwin/X context menu and then start gnome-session from an xterm.

There are probably easier ways, but that should at least get you started.
