bainbridge.  destroyers all; #1 was dd1, #5 is burke-class ddg96.  my
mother christened it at bath iron works.

he comanded the constitution in its famous encounter with hms java off
the brazilian coast in the war of 1812, and later he introduced the
idea of enclosed drydocks [at quonset pt, ri] so that ship work could
continue through the winter.

he lost his ship off the barbary coast but destroyed it before the
pirates could gain anything from it, and managed to retrieve every one
of his crewmen.
