" A company may LOAD parts into
" an assembly in order to make it a base building block suitable for many
" models. It's sometimes cheaper to waste parts than to warehouse many
" assemblies, schedule manufacture and resources and arrange for
" outsourced parts.
"
" We see this in the auto industry all the time with wiring harnesses.
" Ever wonder what that dangling connector is for? It's something like the
" more expensive stereo with power antenna that you didn't order.

a well-known 'secret' in the jeep cherokee fraternity. an upgrade to
the full gauge instrument cluster is plug-'n-play with only the oil
and water senders also needing changing; all the wires are there and
ecms are all the same. 4-cyls and 6-cyls even use the same tach; it's
driven from the ecm which just fakes up a signal based on what it
knows of engine rpm.

likewise the wiring for the overhead trip computer console.

door harnesses -are- different. the full job for an '01 with pw/pdl
is over $300, and they all flex and go bad at the hinge.	;^<

" The biggest example of this I've ever seen is the Suzuki Vitara and the
" Chevrolet Tracker. They INCLUDE the 4X4 front axles, differential and
" transfer case on all models. If you buy a 4X4, you get the transfer case
" lever and the internals for the transfer case. Junkyards and dealers are
" always getting requests for the transfer case internals and lever
" assembly.

this is )(*&^%$# incredible... maybe it indicates how few 2wd models
they sell vs. full 4wd ones.

" Also, just one note from the past: as someone else said none of this
" is new. The UK sports car called the Sunbeam Tiger used a Ford
" drivetrain. I used to want one of those really bad. Maxwell drove
" one in that 60s spy comedy "Get Smart".

not the first. the original shelby cobra was an ac 'ace' with a ford
in it too.

and btw like the cobra the tiger was based on an existing sportscar.
and it ended when mopar bought sunbeam and couldn't fit their own 273
under the tiger's hood.

smart drove a karmann ghia in the last year of the series. it just
wasn't the same...
