Or fry the controller chipset on the mobo.  BTDT.  Not sure if it was  
the 1950s house's crappy electrical system (earlier) or the sagging  
12v rail in my PSU (which I replaced under warranty).  Of course, the  
latter may well have been as a result of the former, too.
