I think the group is actually the Yardbirds.

When Jimmy Page finally became the third lead guitarist for the Yardbirds,
the group folded.
Wikipaedia has a glowing article on Jimmy Page. I hardly recognized him
from their description! At the time, he was thought a good but not great
guitarist. He was not the "hero" or "good-guy" that the article describes
him as.

One of my most enjoyable moments with Jimmy Page was Led Zepplin's first
(full-fledged) tour. He hit the strings with his cello bow and rised it--NO
Sound!!! The echo-plex failed. It was funny. The pompous Jimmy Page
humiliated because he didn't check his guitar. We laughed a lot over that.
His expression was priceless.

When Jimmy Page was trying to get another band together, he scoured Endland
to find Rober Plant. Jeff Beck has the incomparable Rod Stewart and Jimmy
Page was jealous. Anyway, he got his band together and they went off
touring Sweden and other places (as British bands were wont to do back
then). They toured under the name "The New Yardbirds". A friend of Jimmy
Page, on hearing the name, The New Yardbirds, said, Oh, yeah. That'll go
over like a lead zepplin." The New Yardbirds changed the name of the band
to Led Zepplin.

Jimmy Page is also a thief. Both he and Eric Clapton played the blues.
Eric Clapton takes the old, black, bluesmen's songs and plays them and gives
credit to the original author (a la, Crossroads). Jimmy Page, on the other
hand, corrects the English and publishes them as if he wrote them. [This
was documented many time in music publications in the 60's and 70's. Ian
Anderson was so infuriated that he wrote at least one song calling Jimmy
Page's hand. {Hopefully, I refereneced the correct Ian. British guy who
went on to fame with Jethro Tull.}]

Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck are consummate guitarists in the "rock and roll"
genre. Eric Clapton is certainly one of the outstanding blues guitarists
and the reclusive Jeff Beck is more into Jazz. Jimmy Page remains a Top40
hack. Never as good as he could or should have been.
