Not exactly.  The first Star Wars movie was inspired by Akira Kurosawa's
Kakushi-toride no san-akunin, i.e The Hidden Fortress.  In the Criterion
edition of that film, they include an interview with Lucas where he talks
about how it influenced him and the story he told in the first Star Wars.

I think this whole debate of whether remakes should or shouldn't be made
can't ever reach a solid conclusion, because what is and isn't 'remade'
really devolves into a semantic issue.  So much ends up being recycled and
reinvented in some way or another in different forms, and the process of
classifying it and labelling it I feel is as much a social construct as it
is an external reality.
