It's not at all hard to make it do so.  When I had my run-in with PPP
that led to my using SLIP instead, I had to make it carry IPv6.  See
ftp.rodents.montreal.qc.ca:/mouse/misc/ipv6-slip for more.

True, though UUCP isn't much good for real-time data transport such as
many OS install procedures want (though it could be adapted).  Neither
is zmodem as it is commonly implemented, though it too could be adapted
easily enough.
