My take is that MS knows that they will continue to own the desktop for
the foreseeable future. Linux desktops are but a small part of the
market, and will remain so for quite a while longer yet.

So they can do basically whatever they want without really losing
market share.

Corporate and other volume licensees will stick with XP on the desktop
(just like the 45-desktop church I am on retainer at will stick with
XP/Office 2003 for quite some time). Does MS care? Heck no! - they
are getting $x a pop for shipping 1 CD.

Anyone who is serious about server tasks is running Linux, Solaris,
Win2003 (which doesn't have any of that protection crap).

Go to e.g. http://webhostingtalk.com - you will see that MS has lost
the battle on the internet server side.

Go look at the lame Windows smartphones like the Q - I expect (should
Apple execute even half-decently) they will die off too.

MS needs to milk the desktop market for several more years until they
can figure out the next big thing to steal and market as their own.
