That's a matter of opinion. They provide the necessary documentation
to write a decent driver, and a closed source supported driver for
X86 Linux. 

Compare that to ATI, who won't say anything, or VIA who lie about almost
everything, won't release the source code to anything useable and so on.

I've used NVidia, I've dealt with AMD and Intel and tried to deal with
VIA. If I have a choice, nothing from VIA will ever end up in a computer
of mine. 

AFAIK, the open source NVidia drivers work on X86, PPC, etc and with BSD
too (they are actually part of X).
