I know that, but in order to use secure NFS, I need one of them (at  
least, I think that's what the Sun docs were telling me).

Both. OpenAFS has been suggested to me offlist (oops, and now on list  
- thanks Sevan), and it looks promising, but I haven't implemented it  
yet.
