Hide folders you don't wanna see. Lack of subscriptions can cause big
problems for email programs that automatically check for messages in
mailboxes, ie older versions of Apple's Mail.app.

There's a lot of brain-dead stuff in IMAP and folder subscriptions is
one of them: no move, only copy; mark-as-deleted-then-expunge rather
than really just deleting the message.

Some use subscriptions by default (anything Mozilla-derived), some don't
(some webmail programs). Some don't give you a choice in the matter
(Outlook Express, older versions of Mail.app).

Turn it off in Thunderbird:

Tools -> Account Settings -> "Server Settings" for the account in
question  -> Click "Advanced" button -> Uncheck "Show only subscribed
folders"
