No, it's not a red herring.  If you want to shout how flawed the
Democrats are but turn a blind eye to the equal-but-separate flaws of
the Republicans, then as the saying used to go, "you're part of the
problem".  As long as the faithtul of EITHER party continue to say
"Those guys are crooks and liars, but don't you dare criticize MY guys",
the status quo will continue to get worse.

Calling the Republicans on the carpet too is, indeed, taking sides.
It's taking the "us" side in "all of us vs. all of them", where "all of
them" is ALL the crooked politicians regardless of party affiliation.

I don't see a problem with that.
