it's a fine irony that when queen bess died heirless, the english
-had- to give their throne to her nearest relative, the king of the
hated scots!  the gaelic system was better - a derbfhine of 3
generations of the royal family, extending out to 2nd cousins at least
iirc, voted on any succession.  the son of the late king had a running
start but by no means a lock on the position.  it was common to
nominate an older relative as heir, to step in if needed before the
next generation came of age.
