I've had good luck with Evince, which seems to do a good job rendering the
PDFs I've thrown at it (the majority of them generated by Acrobat running
on Windows). It's also fast and has a fairly decent UI.

Of course, it's a GNOME application, so it has its fair share of
dependencies: 
[pa] mj at majestic:~$ ldd `which evince` |wc -l
      66
(that's on a NetBSD/alpha system)
