>From what I understand #2 heating oil comes from the same process as
diesel, except it's dyed to make it obvious it's untaxed. Maybe it
splits off the process before de-sulfuring, but I wouldn't be surprised
if it's identical because of costs associated with tracking a separate
product.

Having lived in the NE, where oil heat is king, it's obvious by my nose
that a lot of oil burners aren't adjusted right and are a source of
significant pollution. There are laws now about how a tech is supposed
to set up a burner with gas sniffers and temp probes, but nothing
prevents a homeowner from adjusting it after they leave. I had to richen
my mix to make the burner start reliable (it still isn't rich enough to
stink though).
