Well, you got your answer then :)

And yes having different operating systems for the two is a pain - I
have a Catalyst 4003 for my core switch talking to a bunch of 2900XLs
and 3500XLs.

The newer supervisors for 4500 and 6500 chassis can run either, but I
suspect those are outside of your price bracket ;)

The 2948G has the integrated equivalent of a 4000/4500 Supervisor I and
is too old for Cisco to put IOS on it.

Hrm, I thought there was a bigger price difference than that.

You won't, the L3 variant still goes for substantial $$$

The only way to get one cheaply is to not mind a few bad ports ;)
