Everyone here is aware that during the Civil War you could pay money
to someone else to serve in your place, right?  

The price was about $12 IIRC.  I have seen in one of my aunt's homes a
framed document to that effect; basically a receipt that such-and-such
had gone in the place of so-and-so.
