It's as simple as that. In Israel, the relegious try to keep the
comandment to "be fruitful and multiply". The nonrelegious try
to keep to the 2.4 children rule.

As for politics, the nonrelegious used to be leftists. The current
intafada has just about destroyed the Israeli left. The "give the
terrorists anything they want" camp aka Shalom Akshav (Peace Now), took
over the labor party which lost so badly in the last election that it
will soon declare bankruptcy and disapear.

Israeli politcs is far too confusing to make sweeping generalizations like
that, You're defining liberal and conservative as relegious and non, which
says that the source you were refering to was written by a "leftist". I put
that in quotes, as Israel considers itself a democatic socialist country,
so in the end to paraphrase the Firesign Theater, "we're all leftists
on this bus".

This is a very strange country. I know many women who carry guns, having
been trained during their army service. I also know many who do not, and
never served in the army. One of the reasons that special education is
so good here is each class has at least one "sehrut leumi" (national
service) girl, who is invariably relegious, and instead of serving in
the army, does two years of national service as a teachers aid.
