I was just going to say the same about openldap too (afaik it's one of the
better implementations).

There are also good Really Fat Books about PHP. You'l have a lot of fun
reading them. I don't think it will take an average programmer more then a
few days to get to know the ins and outs of PHP. It's not a very difficult
language.
