Assuming you have 24-bit capable graphics ... 

Modify /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers and give a '-visid' option to the X 
startup options (I use 48 ... it'll probably be the same for whatever 
graphics you have).

(and if you're not familiar with how funky SGI X servers can be, do a 
bit of reading and run xdpyinfo)

No real idea, and you've given your temperatures in strange and archaic 
units (and I can't be bothered to change them). But I did once run a 
4d310vgx (a sort of predecessor to the crimson) in a very overheated 
office for about 18 months without problems.

Don't assume that because they're old they'll run cool. Check the 
heatsink on the graphics card set ... you might find it frighteningly 
large. My old friend certainly used to chuck out a great deal of heat.
