Anyone use blender much?

I'm trying to figure out why when I create a cube, turn on subdivision, select
the 4 vertices of a side, extrude them, then click the right mouse button to
cancel, I'm left with a shape that no longer really looks sperical.  Is this
a bug, or am I misunderstanding something?   Unfortunately, my copy of the
blender manual, or blender guide, or whatever they call that official book
is for version 2.03 which predates the subdivision surfaces.
