I eventually solved this problem by the following expedient:

- boot cdrom -s
- Mount both submirrors directly
- Hand-edit the rootdev line in /etc/system
- Reboot, now successfully booting from the primary boot disk
- Blow away and recreate all three hosed metadevices (d10, d11, d12)
- Recreate mewtadevices and re-mirror root slice

The root mirror just finished resyncing, and everything is All Happy
Now.
