Sounds more like you are setting up the port on the 2924 as a trunk.  If
you want the Sun box to talk to it, this is OK, but generally(not always),
one sends the trunk uplink to a router, to access logically disparate(by
the VLAN) subnets or chunks of subnets, or supernets, or the trunk uplink
goes to another switch hosting other parts of your VLAN.

If you set up the VLAN on the 2924(syntax escapes me, but I'm assuming
it's identical to CatOS 4 and 5), you would set port vlan xxx for the
port, set port speed and set port duplex.  Then force the Sun into the
same speed and duplex(via ndd and make it stick in /etc/system).

802.1q is just a means of tagging frames so the switch can figure out what
VLAN they belong to.  802.1p, which I'm wondering if that's what you are
thinking of, is an inspection of those tags(very simplified) for QoS-type
services.  

So in brief, create your VLANS(or create none at all -- the 2924, unless
it's used with other switches, almost isn't worth using in VLAN mode), set
speed and duplex on both the switch and the sun box, and have fun.  No
need to set up the trunk(unless the CatOS on the 2924 is radically
different than the 5K Cats).
