Chris,
Are you locked into a particular OS version? I have an Ultra5 with
an IBM 40Gb Hdd in it. I am running Solaris 8 (10/00) with no patches and I
have had no problems with it.

Subject: [SunHELP] Large EIDE Disk in Ultra5

Hello-

I've been combing the net high and low (as well as
SunSolve) looking for information regarding Large
(bigger than 32Gb) EIDE hard disks for an Ultra5. I
recently bought a Western Digital 40Gb drive that I'd
like to put in my U5 and NFS serve. I found on
SunSolve Bug 4302559: Unable To Install A 3rd Party
EIDE DRIVE > 32GB On An Ultra 5/10
Running Solaris

That bug was fixed in patch 108974. I downloaded
patch 108974 and ran the patchadd against it. It
succeeded. I did a touch /reconfigure and reboot'ed.

Prior to the patch I noticed that in dmesg there were
logs of "bad magic number" for the large disk I was
trying to install. After the patch those messages
disappeared.

I tried going into the format, partition, modify
command to resize the slices. The hog size was still
5.77gb (this is what it was before I added the patch).
I tried to change it to make it higher. It
complained that the numbers I entered were invalid.

I looked on SunSolve for a firmware upgrade and found
one for Solaris 8. However, there wasn't any mention
of disk related stuff in that firmware upgrade. So I
didn't install it.

I'm not quite sure what to do at this point. I'm sure
that it's possible to use large disks (I've seen Sun
selling U5's with 20Gb disks in them) but I need some
help as to where I should go at this point. Can you
help me?

PS - I'm crossposting this e-mail to the the SunHelp
mailing list. Hope someone can help me out!

Thanks,

Chris
